What Is Blue Light Therapy, Exactly?

Blue light therapy is a form of LED (light-emitting diode) phototherapy. You sit or lie under a panel of LEDs emitting visible blue light — typically in the 415–470 nanometre range — for around 15 to 30 minutes.

What Does Blue Light Therapy Do?

The bacteria most associated with acne — Cutibacterium acnes — naturally produce compounds called porphyrins as part of their normal metabolism. Porphyrins have an inconvenient (for them) property: they absorb blue light extremely well.

When blue light hits those porphyrins, they get energised and release reactive oxygen species — unstable molecules that damage the bacterium’s own cell membrane from the inside.

The bacteria are killed by a chemical they manufactured themselves. It’s the most poetic thing happening in dermatology.

How Deep Does It Go?

Blue light has a short wavelength, which means it doesn’t travel far into tissue. It works mainly in the epidermis — the surface layers where acne bacteria live and where oil glands open.

🥇 Tier 1: Strong Evidence

Blue light therapy for acne — This is the headline act. Mild to moderate inflammatory acne responds well, particularly those angry red papules and pustules. It reduces bacterial load, calms inflammation, and doesn’t dry out your skin barrier the way harsh topicals can.

It’s especially useful for people who can’t tolerate strong actives, are pregnant, or are simply exhausted by their eighth “purging phase.”

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) — A medical-grade version where a light-sensitising solution is applied first, then activated with blue light. Used clinically for actinic keratoses (sun-damage lesions) and stubborn acne. This one is genuinely powerful — and genuinely medical.

Blue light therapy for inflammation — By reducing bacterial triggers and calming inflammatory signalling in the skin, blue light lowers the redness and swelling around active breakouts. It’s part of why skin looks calmer within a couple of weeks.

Blue light therapy for skin in general — Oil control, smaller-looking pores over time, fewer new breakouts, and a general “less angry” quality. It also pairs beautifully with other treatments as a finishing step.

Blue light therapy for seasonal depression — Here’s where the wavelength story shifts. For seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the treatment is a bright light box (usually 10,000 lux of broad-spectrum white light) used for 20–30 minutes each morning. It works through the eyes, resetting circadian rhythm and melatonin timing.

Blue-enriched light boxes exist and have been studied with promising results, but bright white light remains the best-established standard. Is Blue Light Therapy Safe? Who Should Skip It

Blue light therapy has an excellent safety record. Still, it’s not for absolutely everyone.

Be cautious or check with a professional if you:

  • Have melasma or pigmentation that flares with light exposure
  • Have a photosensitivity disorder (like lupus or porphyria)
  • Take photosensitising medication — some antibiotics, diuretics, retinoids, and St John’s Wort
  • Have a history of seizures triggered by flashing light
  • Have very deep skin tones — LED is generally safe, but pigment response should be professionally assessed

Eye protection is non-negotiable. Always. Even at home, even for “just five minutes.”
